About the studio

Matter, made to speak.

Studio principal — PengZeng

piiiz is the studio of PengZeng.

Peng Zeng is a China-based artist and designer from a background in Product Design. Peng explores the elastic boundaries of the conventional product design and studies the art of design in visual and spatial fields. Peng places an emphasis on encountering new materials and discovering ever-evolving bodies of work through experimentation and organic research.

While intertwining the functionalities of the medium and the ultimate visual quality in design, Peng produces a contemporary body of work that sublimes into a curious amalgam of her artistic disciplines of provocative objects of balance.

Fragments

Objects as language — in matter, or in form.

A natural pull toward the heavy, the coarse.

Even light materials are drawn as thick lines — surfaces stacked into volume.

Sequence and repetition amplify a material's voice.

A symbol to carry through the work — a thread, a line.

European motifs, estranged on Chinese ground — distorted, then re-cut.

A practice, in years.

Behind every object are the people who helped make it possible.

This photograph captures an important chapter of my journey. During the buzao years, I worked alongside an exceptional team of designers, engineers and makers. Together, we developed furniture and lighting collections, collaborated with manufacturers across China, and spent countless hours prototyping, refining details and learning directly from materials and craftsmanship.

Over time, our understanding of design evolved beyond creating individual products. It became a continuous exploration of materials, manufacturing and the value objects can bring to everyday life.

While piiiz is an independent practice today, its foundation was built through these early explorations — where many of the questions we continue to investigate first emerged.
